Laura Jean

Melbourne songwriter Laura Jean is revered for the striking beauty of her music and the strength of her piercing, intimate lyrics. In Australia she has been shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize (our version of the Mercury Prize), and has recorded with national icons Paul Kelly and The Drones. She has toured Australia and New Zealand with Aldous Harding and Marlon Williams, UK/Europe with Jenny Hval, and performed at the National Gallery Of Victoria and Sydney Town Hall.

New album Devotion (due in June 2018) is a stunning artistic about-face from her previous folk-based work. Working with Melbourne producer John Lee, she has created an enveloping, deep pop album like nothing she has done before. First singles Touchstone and Girls On the TV have already had superlative reviews from Pitchfork, Gorilla Vs Bear, Noisey, NME and elsewhere. She has also acquired some high profile fans such as Lorde (see tweet quoted above) and actor Brie Larson, who shared Touchstone as an Instagram story.

Devotion is an album about teenage obsession, coastal childhood and vivid memory - universal themes filtered through Laura's razor sharp lyrical focus. Initial influences for the record took in R'n'B, 80s adult contemporary pop and 70s disco, but the end result is transformed into something wholly other, full of depth, resonance and mystery.

Laura Jean signed with Chapter Music in 2011, her album A fool who'll called "an uncompromising triumph" by Rolling Stone. In 2014, Laura recorded her self-titled album in the UK with producer John Parish (PJ Harvey, Perfume Genius, Aldous Harding), with backing vocals by Norwegian star Jenny Hval.
